Samsung has announced that the Samsung Galaxy Player 4″ and Galaxy Player 5″ which the company unveiled at MWC last month will be headed to this spring. These portable Android devices are smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Tab line of Android tablets, but they lack the cellular data capabilities of a Samsung Galaxy S Smartphone.

Both the 4 and 5 inch models will ship with Google Android 2.2 Froyo, with an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread available later on. They both support Adobe Flash and have 3.2MP rear cameras with autofocus and front-facing VGA cameras. The 5 inch model also has a flash on the rear camera.

Both handhelds have 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and support microSD cards. Aside from the flash on the Galaxy Player 5″ the biggest difference between the two is size: The 5 inch model is bigger than the 4 inch unit. But you didn’t exactly need me to tell you that. Despite the physical differences in the screen, both models haves display resolutions of 480 x 800 pixels.

Originally, I’d been hearing that the 5 inch model would have a 5MP camera, but it looks like the camera has been downgraded.

The good news is that these little guys are well positioned to be portable media players, with support for MP4, H.264, DivX, Xvid, MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, and AAC media formats.

There’s no word on pricing yet, and we’re still waiting for an official US release date.

  1. It’s been months since this announcement and still no sign of those tablets except in Korea or France.  MY 8 years old keeps pestering me about getting an iPod touch and I’d much prefer giving her a 4″ Android tablet instead.

  2. The other good news is that it has GPS. I don’t know if it’s GPS-A or standalone, but either makes it immensely more useful.

Shame these, would really love a modern update of the Dell streak 5 with a cellular data and a qHD screen. 🙁
