Samsung Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note is one of the most unusual Android devices to hit the streets this year. It has a 5.3 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display which is just the right size for a smartphone… if you’re over 7 feet tall and have huge hands. Or maybe it’s the right size for a tablet if you think a tablet should be able to fit into pants pocket (although some people swear that 7 inch tablets fit just fine in their pockets).

The device also uses a stylus, has an AMOLED display, and a 1.4 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface and S Pen software for using the stylus.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note this summer, and it’s now on sale in the Netherlands… and nowhere else, as far as I can tell. The company has posted a teaser video on YouTube, and that video is in English. Hopefully that means it will show up in the US, UK, and other English speaking nations soon. It also passed through the FCC website last month.

The Galaxy Note has an 8MB rear-facing camera and a 2MP front camera, a 2500mAh battery, and weighs about 6 ounces.

The device is selling for 597 Euros in the Netherlands, which is about $830 US — but it’s likely to be much cheaper if and when it goes on sale in the US, especially if AT&T or another wireless carrier subsidizes the price for customers that sign long term service contracts.

  1. I like your interpretation of “subsidizing”.  It kind of makes me feel like I can buy a house for the low price of just a down payment and the bank will “subsidize” the balance of the actual price, as long as I sign a contract that obliges me to make month after months of payments to them.  In reality, this usage of the term “subsidy” is almost a direct opposite of what is true.

    1. Well, the alternative is paying full price up front and still paying for a monthly plan since this device is meant to be used as a phone.

  2. “The device is selling for 597 Euros in the Netherlands”

Does that price include the 19% VAT?

      1. Thanks for the confirmation. So really the price of the device is more like 502 Euro, or about $700 US. The other money is tax. Still pricey.
