The Exynos 7420 processor used in Samsung’s latest phones is already one of the fastest ARM-based chips on the market. But Samsung says its next chip will be offer a 30 percent performance boost and 10 percent better power efficiency.
Samsung plans to begin mass producing the first Exynos 8 Octa chip by the end of th eyear.
Like the Exynos 7420, the new Exynos 8890 is an octa-core, 64-bit chip based on ARMv8 technology and manufactured using a 14nm FinFET process.
But while the 7420 featured four ARM Cortex-A57 CPU cores and four lower-power Cortex-A53 cores, the new chip is the first to pair four of Samsung’s own custom ARMv8 CPU cores with four Cortex-A53 cores. It’ also the company’s first premium chip to feature an integrated LTE modem with maximum download speeds up to 600 Mbps and upload speeds as high as 150 Mbps.
The Exynos 8 Octa chip features ARM Mali-T880 graphics.
Integrated modem? not a good idea, that would make it more vulnerable to hackers. i prefer a separate wifi or modem chip.
Looks like a very powerful SOC. In fact I consider it far too strong for running phones.
This looks more suitable for laptops.
Samsung phones should be stronger than laptops because of Gear VR. People will be disappointed if next flagship doesn’t have 4k screen. Playing games in 4k is demanding especially if image has to be rendered for each eye.
Agree, Samsung should be making Tizen laptops using this chip. Exynos laptops running cyanogen mod or ubuntu would be nice too.
I will be fine with “stock” ARM cores now that they are offering such amazing variety of cores: A72, A57,A53,A35 in a mix and match+ big& little tech that I don’t see the need to get too exited about in house designed cores. Keep the software up to date stick with as close to possible stock Android and the prices low and I will be happy!
If you want to see stupid spam posts in heavily broken English talk to this loser ∆
Double posting because the update is too big for an edit.
The GPU is MP12 and that’s rather nuts. Huawei is using MP4 ,ofc likely at much higher clocks and the 7420 MP8 at clocks that are too high.
Hopefully they aren’t pushing the clocks too high if there’s really 12 GPU cores. Nuts.
You can’t say that it’s coming in 2015 if it starts production now (or a few weeks ago). The chip on such a process can spend up to 3 months in the fab. So they get the chip early next year, it takes a bit to build the devices and ship them and maybe retail in March at best.
Man, that BGA chip has plenty of balls all right!
