Samsung isn’t done with its Galaxy Note line of smartphones just yet. Some people were starting to wonder if the company might give up on its line of phones with big screens, digital pen support, and other premium features, but the company has announced that it is indeed working on a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which will likely be released in 2017.
The company has announced that Korean customers who took advantage of the Galaxy Note 7 recall and traded in their phones for a Galaxy S7 will be able to get a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 for half-price when the new phones launch next year.
The move comes on the heels of a report suggesting Samsung still doesn’t know what caused a number of Note 7 smartphones to catch fire, leading to a massive recall, a re-launch, and a second recall. Eventually Samsung decided to scrap the phone altogether rather than continue to sink money into identifying and fixing the problem and then trying to convince people that it’s really safe to buy the phone this time.
Samsung is one of the world’s top smartphone makers, but the company has taken a bit publicity hit (and a big financial hit) in the wake of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle…Â but for the past few years the company has taken a 2-flagships-per-year strategy by launching a Galaxy S smartphone and a Galaxy Note every year.
Until the Note 8 comes along though, it looks like the company will be stuck pushing just a single flagship: the Galaxy S7. It’ll be interesting to see whether the company’s half-price offer helps convince people to give the Note line a try again next year… especially since customers need to enroll in the program by November 30th of this year in order to get the special pricing.
It’s not yet clear whether a similar offer will be made outside of the company’s home country of South Korea.
