BlackBerry PlayBook

Nobody from Research in Motion never officially came out and said that the company was working on a 10 inch version of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. But there were rumors making the rounds that a larger version of RIM’s 7 inch tablet could ship later this year. Now the folks at n4bb are reporting that RIM has canceled development of the 10 inch tablet.

Just to make sure you’re taking all of this with the appropriate dosages of grains of salt, let’s put it this way. There was a rumor that something was going to happen. Now there’s a rumor that it won’t. But it still could. Or maybe it was never anything more than a rumor in the first place.

Anyway, n4bb reports that the plan has been canceled so that RIM can instead focus on the development of its first BlackBerry smartphone to use the same QNX software found on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The phone will reportedly have a 1.2 Ghz single core processor and a high resolution 4.3 inch touchscreen display.

There are a number of ways to read this report. It could be that the PlayBook isn’t selling as well as RIM might have hoped so the company doesn’t want to push another model so soon. It could also be that the PlayBook is selling well and so the company doesn’t want to dilute the market with another product so soon. Or maybe RIM really does just want to push out a new type of smartphone soon — although it seems kind of surprising that the company couldn’t focus on a new tablet and a new phone at the same time.

But in case you didn’t get the memo, this is all just a rumor for now, so it will probably be a while before we get answers… if there are any to be had.
