Ask and you shall receive. Yesterday I pointed out that Toshiba was one of the only big name computer companies that had yet to announce a low cost ultraportable laptop. Today, jkOnTheRun is reporting that Toshiba is showing a netbook to university suppliers.

The Toshiba netbook will reportedly have an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, a 4 cell battery, and run Windows XP. Customers will be able to choose between models with a hard drive or a solid state disk.

No word on the name, price, or release date. But the box apparently said Libretto on it. That’s the name Toshiba has long given to its ultraportable class of notebook computers. It’s possible the new netbook will be launched under the Libretto line. It’s also possible that the only boxes Toshiba had lying around that were the right size for the netbook were Libretto boxes.

Note that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard a rumor about Toshiba getting into the netbook game. But it is the first time I’m aware of that we’ve seen any specs — even if they look virtually identical to the specs of practically every other netbook on the market.
