Yesterday Intel and Nokia announced a partnership to work together on software and hardware in the future. Today, there’s a rumor going around that Nokia has ordered batches of netbooks from Quanta and Compal, two Taiwanese OEMs that have a strong record of producing computers and netbooks for big name companies to rebrand and sell in the West.

The Quanta netbook will reportedly have an Intel Atom processor and hit the streets as early as the third quarter of 2009. The Compal machine will be a “Smartbook,” based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform.

No word on what software these computers will run, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some form of the Maemo OS designed for Nokia’s Internet Tablets (like the Nokia N810 pictured above) on one or both of the machines.
