Rockchip’s RK3288 processor is starting to show up in Android-powered tablets and TV boxes. Now Rockchip is also showing off a prototype of Chromium OS running on a system with its new ARM Cortex-A17 quad-core processor.

Rockchip RK3288 board

Chromium OS is the open source version of Google’s Chrome operating system. Rockchip says the ARM Cortex-A17 processor offers strong enough performance to open up to 30 Google Chrome browser tabs at once.

The RK3288 chip features ARM Mali-T764 graphics with support for 4K video and H.265 video decoding, and when ARMDevices caught up with Rockchip at the HKTDC show in Hong Kong this week, the company was showing devices powering 4K displays.

Rockchip is also showing a handful of Android tablets with the new RK3288 chip, featuring cold boot speeds as short as 8 seconds.

  1. Is something already appeared physically on sale?
The Chromebox or TVbox on rk3288, Can topic died?
Suspends the buying has just awaiting the kr3288 because reluctance box on Intel.

  2. Seems like the small tablet was from FNF. They are known for producing tablets with high quality for a budget price. Hopefully they will be one of the first to also release a RK3288 tablet. RK3188 is a fine chip, but it’s just too weak to deal with high-resolution screens.

  3. if i could have one of these Dev board and have ChromeOS on it, i’d be happy.

or if it was like the Hardkernel guys with the O-DROIDs and U-DROIDs etc, though those usually use Exynos processors

  4. I thought this would settle whether its a true Cortex A17 or A12. The marketing and everything showed it as A17, but when asked whether it was a A17 or A12, he gave the following answer
“There’s little difference between A17 and A12, and I don’t want to comment on that”

The confusion is set to continue.

    1. I don’t think its confusing. When Rockchip initially declared that RK3288 included Cortex A17, they did so in violation of ARM’s embargo on A17 announcements, presumably by accident. When they became aware of this they scrambled to cover up by substituting Cortex A12 in their signage. Of course, the matter must have been a major embarrassment to them and it remains a “raw nerve”. So, it is naive and rude to expect them to comment candidly on the matter. I have no doubt it’s an A17. Move on.

      1. ARM are still claiming the A17 will not be out until 1st – 2nd qtr next year. Quite the difference. Its the A12 thats meant to be out nowish

  5. I just want one of these, or any tegra 4 or better with 4GB RAM or more.

It would become the perfect home device.

    1. 4GB for Android? Too much. 2GB is enough for every Android and 4.4 doesn’t need so many RAM as older Android 4.x

      1. but chromeOS or Ubuntu etc are like most desktop OSs, the more RAM you give them, the happier they’ll be, its not just about what it needs now, its what it’ll need to keep running this smooth in a few months/years

      2. People used to say similar things about similar things. You’ll NEVER run out of space with 1gb! Along with memory bandwidth. Blah blah blah.

      3. Depend on your usage, and if application doesn’t really follow Google stupid recommendations. Google recomand application to don’t have a quit option, so they sature the ram quickly and user don’t see bad backdoor things inside the myriad of runing application. You also then don’t have enough ram to run everything, everything become slow, you buy a new device, and then google sell another Android license (bingo).

Else if you want to use another OS like destop One, on this kind of light computer, you will be happy to have enough ram to have lot of web browser tabs and your favorite applications working together.

  6. Can’t wait for your review of one of these tablets! Just hope some have 2 GB of RAM and 1080 resolution.

    1. So you want it to have lower resolution? I assume it will still do 1080 with an HDMI cable just fine.

      1. Why drive 4k on a 7 – 10 tablet? I can’t see the difference, but then I am old. I just hope nobody creates one of these with 4k output to HDMI but a screen resolution around 600.

    2. i guess you gotta wait for radxa to release their next itteration of the radxa rock…
