Chinese chip maker Rockhip’s latest chips are some of the most powerful dual and quad-core processors based on ARM Cortex-A9 designs. The quad-core RK3188 chip has been available in tablets and mini PCs for a few months, and the dual-core RK3168 hit the streets more recently.

Now Rockchip has announced that it’s working with chip foundry GlobalFoundries to ramp up production of both chips, which could mean we’ll see these processors in even more devices soon.

RK3168 and RK3188

Rockhip processors are popular with Chinese device makers, but occasionally you’ll find them in products sold in the US such as the HP Slate 7 or Archos Arnova tablets.

The RK3188 and RK3168 are 28nm processors which can safely operate at speeds up to 1.8 GHz, although they tend to be capped at 1.6 GHz in most devices. We’ve seen the RK3188 unofficially overclocked to run as fast as 1.92 GHz.

The RK3188 quad-core chip features quad-core ARM Mali-400 graphics with clock speeds up to 600 MHz, while the Dual-core RK3168 features PowerVR SGX 540 graphics.

Both can handle 1080p HD video encoding and decoding.

  1. I was wondering why Rockchip even release their chip without proper bug testing and optimized coding. Until now all RK3188 tablet still suffer problem reading PDF.

This is just a small bugs but yet haven’t resolve , it’s been months already !
