This is hardly shocking news, but Research in Motion is apparently planning to release a keyboard accessory for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. In fact, if there’s anything surprising about that news, it’s the fact that the keyboard isn’t already available for purchase.
The company was showing off accessories for the PlayBook as early as January, but so far most of what we’ve seen have been protective cases for the tablet.
Competing tablets such as the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Motorola XOOM all have official optional keyboard accessories — not to mention third party solutions.
The BlackBerry PlayBook has a pretty good on-screen keyboard, but even the best virtual keyboards can’t compete with a physical keyboard in terms of tactile response. On-screen keyboards also have a way of blocking half the screen more more while you’re typing.
There’s no word on how much the accessory will cost, but Pocket Lint reports that it should be available “in the coming months.”
