Samsung may have been one of the first companies to launch a smartwatch using Google’s Android Wear software… but the company’s first Android Wear watch was also its last.

Since launching the Samsung Gear Live, the company has launched half a dozen other wearables, and they’ve all used a version of the Tizen operating system.

So it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that Samsung confirmed to Fast Company that it currently has no plans to launch another Android Wear device.

Update: Or maybe not. A Samsung representative tells Engadget that Fast Company may have misinterpreted things… although it’s not like we’ve seen any signs of an Android Wear watch from Samsung since the original Gear Live.

Tizen gives Samsung more control over the software that runs on its devices than Android Wear, and the company also says it’s more energy-efficient. Samsung’s smartwatches do tend to get longer battery life than most models with Android Wear software (although they don’t last as long as Pebble watches, which can run for a week or longer between charges).

Samsung also uses Tizen for other connected products including smart TVs and smart home appliances.

The company has also produced a few smartphones running Tizen-based software, but they’ve had limited success in the market. So it’s likely that Samsung will continue to use Android on most of its smartphones while relying on Tizen for its other gadgets and IoT devices.
