Gaming hardware company Razer introduced its first wearable device at CES in January. Now the company’s getting ready to launch a beta test, and 500 people will have a chance to buy a beta unit of the Razer Nabu wristband for just $1 on July 10th, 2014.

At that price, I suspect there are plenty of people who’d be willing to take the Razer Nabu for a test drive. But Razer is looking for “hardcore fans,” so in order to be chosen you need to sign up to join the beta program, already be an active user of Razer hardware or software, and it doesn’t hurt to be an active member of the Razer community on social channels including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.

The Nabu combines features of a smartwatch and fitness tracker. What Razer thinks it brings to the table is a sort of gamification of it all, so once you set personal fitness goals, the Nabu system will challenge you to reach those goals.

In addition to counting steps and tracking distance traveled and sleep quality, the Nabu can display notifications about incoming phone calls or text messages.

Razer also includes support for peer-to-peer communications, allowing your Nabu to share data with other Nabu devices in the vicinity so that you could do things like share contact info just by shaking someone’s hand.

The company plans to offer an API with support for third-party apps, so the Nabu device could become more useful over time.

Don’t want to have to compete for one of the $500 beta units? If you’re an app developer, you can try joining the Razer Nabu Developer Program. If you’re approved, you can pick up a Nabu Developer Edition device for $50.
