Chip maker Qualcomm has already promised to deliver its first 64-bit chips later this year. But the Snapdragon 410, 610, and 615 chips are chips for mid-range devices and they’ll likely be used in mid-range smartphones and tablets.
Qualcomm plans to shake things up a bit in the first half of 2015 though, whn the company will launch its new Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810 chips for high-end devices.
Both chips are 20nm processors which use ARM big.LITTLE technology to pair low-power ARMv8 64-bit CPU cores with higher-performance cores.
The Snapdragon 808 has 2 ARM Cortex-A57 CPU cores, 4 Cortex-A53 cores, and Adreno 418 graphics. The Snapdragon 810 chip has 4 Cortex-A57 cores, 4 Cortex-A53 cores, and Adreno 430 graphics.
While there aren’t a lot of mobile applications designed to take advantage of 64-bit processing yet, that could change by the time these chips are out. But more importantly, the 64-bit architecture isn’t the only improvement.
Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 810, for instance, will offer up to 30 percent faster graphics than the Snapdragon 805 chip… which hasn’t even hit the streets yet. The chip also adds support for high-speed LPDDR4 memory and supports Bluetooth 4.1, 4K video, and Cat 6 LTE networks.
The Snapdragon 808 won’t be quite as powerful thanks to fewer CPU cores and LPDDR3 memory, but Qualcomm says it’ll offer a 20 percent graphics performance boost over the Snapdragon 800 chip, among other improvements.
