Qualcomm’s next chips for premium smartphones and tablets is coming in the first half or 2016, and while Qualcomm isn’t saying much else about the Snapdragon 820 processor itself for now, the company is starting to paint a picture of the chip’s new Adreno 530 graphics processor.

According to Qualcomm, the new graphics processor will offer up to 40 percent better graphics while consuming 40 percent less power than the Adreno 430 graphics included in today’s Snapdragon 810 chips.

Other improvements include a new Spectra image signal processor with support for up to 3 cameras (two on the back and one on the front) and support for capturing 25 megapixel images at 30 frames per second with zero shutter lag. Qualcomm says the Spectra camera ISP also supports 14-bit sensors and should offer autofocus improvements and enable capture of images with better color reproduction and more natural skin tones.

The Adreno 530 processor will be th most powerful member of the Adreno 5xx family, but it won’t be the only option. Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 618 and 620 chips will feature slightly less powerful Adreno 510 graphics.

We first heard about Adreno 530’s improved graphics performance and power consumption from leaked documents earlier this month. If the other information in those documents is accurate, the Snapdragon 820 could also offer up to 35 percent better CPU performance than the Snapdragon 810 processor.

Of course, those documents also said the Snapdragon 820 would ship by the end of 2015, while Qualcomm is now saying the chip will be available in early 2016. So take the info with a grain of salt.

  1. Both dates could be right (one for sampling and the other for shipping products…)
