Chip maker Qualcomm recently unveiled a new developer prototype based on the company’s latest Snapdragon S4 chips, and now the company has announced that the prototype is running an early build of Google Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Qualcomm is still working on optimizing Ice Cream Sandwich to play well with its S4 processors, and the company says it’s also working to bring Android 4.0 to older Snapdragon chips including those used in a number of popular phones and tablets over the last few years.
Google Android 4.0 is the first version of Google’s mobile operating system designed for phones and tablets. The company released the source code last month, but the available source is optimized for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone. Companies using different hardware have been porting the software to support a variety of different platforms.
In fact, we’ve already seen progress in porting Android 4.0 to run on devices with x86 or MIPS chips even though the source code Google has released so far was designed for ARM-based processors.
Qualcomm’s developer tablet is just a prototype at this point, but it shows some of the features we may eventually be able to find from tablets with S4 processors including support for 4G LTE and support for 1080p HD video recording as well as 3D video.
