Wireless chargers may be convenient, but they’re not super-fast. It usually takes a little longer to fully charge the battery in your phone or tablet when you place it on a wireless charging pad than it does when you actually plug in a power cable.

But that could change now that the Wireless Power Consortium has released a new specification for Qi charger. It means next-gen chargers will be ale to deliver up to 15 watts for quicker charging of your mobile devices.

The consortium says the new specification could allow a smartphone to get about a 60 percent charge in a half hour. That’s similar to Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which lets you do the pretty much the same thing with a USB charging cable.

Things could get even more interesting when the rival Rezence charging technology from the Alliance for Wireless Power becomes more common. Rezence supports up to 50 watts of wireless charging power, which will provide enough juice to not only power a smartphone or tablet quickly, but also to charge a laptop battery.
