Google’s Project Fi is a wireless network that combines WiFi and cellular service and which refunds customers for unused data each month. For folks that don’t use a lot of data every single month, it can be a relatively affordable option. But up until recently Project Fi has only been available for a few devices: the Google Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, and nexus 5X.
Now Google is adding support for more hardware… but that doesn’t mean more phones. The company is now letting existing customers add tablets to their existing plans for no additional fee.
You’ll need a data-only SIM to add a tablet to your account, and Google should begin offering those SIMs in the next few days. You can add up to 9 data-only SIMs to your account, allowing you to share your data between up to 10 devices, including your phone.
While just about any unlocked, T-Mobile compatible device should be able to work with a Project Fi data-only SIM, the company has verified that the Nexus 7, Nexus 9, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, and Samsung Galaxy Tab S should all work well with Project Fi. You can try other tablets (or phones, or smartwatches or other devices), but Google says it may not be able to offer activation help or other troubleshooting tips.
You won’t be able to use your data-only device for tethering. So you can’t use your tablet as a mobile hotspot for your laptop, for instance. But if your laptop has a SIM cards slot, you may just be able to get a SIM for it.
Google will provide a breakdown of how much data is being used by each device, so you can see if you need to add more data to your plan to keep multiple devices connected to the internet.
