Want a laptop that doesn’t take up a lot of space, but which has a keyboard that’s large enough for comfortable touch-typing? Japanese company King Jim has a solution.

The company’s Portabook XMC10 is a laptop with an 8 inch display. But it’s got a keyboard that measures about 12 inches wide. You can fold the keyboard in half so it takes up less space when the laptop is closed.

When you open the laptop’s lid you’ll see the two halves of the keyboard folded up so that their ends are facing the front of the system. Push the outside edges and the keyboard will pivot and the two halves will join together like puzzle pieces.

In the center of the keyboard there’s an optical pointing button.

The laptop weighs about 1.8 pounds and measures about 8″ x 6″ x 1.3″ when it’s folded. Unfold the keyboard and the system measures 10.4″ x 6″.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a laptop with a keyboard that’s wider than the display. But it is the first model I’ve seen in a few years. Unfortunately it’s unlikely that this model will be offered outside of Japan anytime soon.

The Portabook XMC10 is expected to launch in Japan in February for about 90,000 yen, which is roughly $740 US.

It has an Intel Atom x7-8700 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC 5.0 storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and an 8 inch, 1280 x 768 pixel display.

The notebook has stereo speakers, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI and VGA ports, and a micro USB port.

  1. Okay, price aside, did anyone look at the pictures from the side? It hit the trifecta: hideous, overpriced, and pointless.

  2. I thought it was a great idea until i saw the price tag..it does make me wish HP had a similar idea when they made the HP Envy x2 the uneven bezels on that machine make me cringe

  3. Wow, I’m usually not in for the race-to-the-bottom thinness craze, but this machine is thick!

  4. I thought this looked familiar. . . It’s made by the same company that makes the POMERA line of electronic typewriters, KINGJIM.

Pricey, but from owning a Pomera a while back I can say that they design the heck out of their products. Hopefully they will change the keyboard color to be the same as the rest of the device. That white keyboard looks bad, but is necessary for marketing materials.

  5. Around $250 and it runs on standard removable recharcheable AA cells, and I’m in – big time. Oh, and it needs 32-bit drivers with that little SDRAM.
