While we’re waiting for devices such as the upcoming Notion Ink Adam or E-Noah Interpad to ship with Pixel Qi’s 3qi low power display, the company has announced its working with Display Solutions AG to deliver a version of the display that you can connect to a computer via a USB connection — or a wireless USB connection.
In other words, you can use the Pixel Qi display as a second screen for your notebook, tablet, or desktop computer.
The screen is the same Pixel Qi display we’ve come to know and love. It’s a 10.1 inch model with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and support for 262,144 colors with the backlight on. You can also turn off the backlight and flip to transflective mode which offers 64 color grayscale and a higher resolution of 3072 x 600 pixels for sharper text. Oh yeah, and it uses available light, which allows it to look almost as bright as an E Ink display.
The display uses just 1.5 Watts and is powered by the USB connection.
Display Solutions will begin offering the screens in October. There’s no word on pricing yet, but I’m hopeful that the two companies have found a way to offer the external display for less than the $275 you currently have to pay to get a standalone screen for placement in a 10 inch netbook.
Fascinating. 3072 is 3x 1024, so this is taking each of the RGB elements and reassigning them to function as grayscale elements?
