Pantech Element

Looking for an Android tablet that you can take out on your boat without worrying about damage from the waves lapping over the sides of the vessel? AT&T is now offering the Pantech Element, a waterproof Android tablet with an 8 inch display. You can snag one for $299.99 with a 2-year contract, or pick up a contract-free model for $449.99.

The tablet has a 1024 x 768 pixel capacitive multitouch display, a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It supports AT&T’s 4G LTE or HSPA+ networks as well as 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The Pantech Element has a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and runs Google Andorid 3.2 Honeycomb. It measures 8.4″ x 6.1″ x 0.4″ and weighs a little more than a pound.

As far as the waterproofing, it only goes so far. AT&T says the tablet is waterproof “against incidental exposure to water.” You’ll need to make sure all the ports are closed in order for the tablet to survive water damage, and AT&T advises against actually trying to use the tablet while submerged — so don’t expect the Element to function as an underwater camera.
