That didn’t take long. Just hours after HP released the source code for Open webOS 1.0, the folks at webOS Ports have managed to get the operating system up and running on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

Open webOS on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

This is still an early build. There’s no support for hardware accelerated graphics, which means that the user interface is sluggish, animations look a bit like slideshows, and I wouldn’t want to try watching HD video (or even surfing the web) using the software in its current state.

But as a proof of concept, it appears that it’s not particularly difficult to get HP’s open source operating system to run on a reasonably open device like the Galaxy Nexus — Google’s latest developer phone.

While HP has released the source code for Open webOS, the company has no current plans release any new phones or tablets running the operating system. Instead, it’s now available for any third party device makers that want to use it… or for independent developers like webOS Ports to bring to existing hardware… which is exactly what’s already starting to happen.

  1. >>>That didn’t take long.

Oh yes it did. If you followed the chatter on Twitter, you would have learned that was two months of work to do. It wasn’t done within hours of 1.0 being released.
