The OnePlus One smartphone is now available for anyone to purchase at any time. You don’t need an invitation and you don’t need to buy the phone on a Tuesday.
While the OnePlus One launched nearly a year ago, the phone still offers a pretty decent value: for $299 and up you can get a phone with a 5.5 inch, full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, and 3GB of RAM.
Of course the news that OnePlus is dropping its invite system for its first smartphone would be more exciting if the company’s second phone weren’t coming soon.
The OnePlus 2Â is expected to launch in the second half of 2015, and OnePlus acknowledges that there will be an invitation system when that phone launches.
The reason the Chinese startup has taken the invite-only route is to help manage inventory: OnePlus sells its phones for close to the price it costs to build them. Requiring potential customers to request an invite helps the company gauge interest in its products so it doesn’t produce more hardware than it can sell.
Hopefully it won’t take nearly as long for OnePlus to drop its invite system after launching the OnePlus 2 as it has for the OnePlus One.
You lost me a year ago with your shinannigans …bye !!
Brad, FYI 3gbs of ram
Whoops!
They should probably just drop the invite system and charge a few dollars more. I probably would have bought one back when they came out if I could have.
Too late, Oneplus. Zenfone 2
This.
I tend to think that is the reason they are dropping the invitation system. Too little too late for me. Others may be more forgiving…
