Noteslate recently started taking pre-orders for a $199 writing slate with a 6.8 inch E Ink display and support for stylus input. But if you’re holding out for something bigger, the company plans to launch a 13 inch model called the Noteslate Hero eventually.

There’s no word on the price or launch date for the Noteslate Hero yet, but the company did release a video that shows what it will look like.

Noteslate isn’t the only company with a new 13 inch E Ink device on the way. Chinese company Onyx is also developing a large-screened eReader.

It’s expected to ship in the spring of 2016 and it reportedly features a high-resolution 2200 x 1650 pixel display and an inductive touchscreen with stylus support.

Don’t expect either of these devices to be as cheap as a typical Kindle. Not only do they have bigger, higher-resolution displays and support for jotting notes with a stylus, but they also come from companies that probably won’t be able to sell devices at razor-thin profit margins while earning revenue from the sale of eBooks and other digital content.

  1. I tried a reader from Onyx before–it had a stylus but used an older version of android that was pretty screwed up. Also you had to use the stylus for everything. They also had a touchscreen model that had pretty poor touchscreen function with a finger. The older version of android was WAAY out of date, causing play store problems. I’d be more interested if it was ANY one other than Onyx. They have a poor track record. That being said with kindle paperwhite/voyager stuck at 6 inches now there are limited choices in the market. I hope they learned from prior mistakes.

  2. Urgh Onyx, my last (in both senses) e-reader was from them and so poorly designed. The data cable for the display was routed to the edge of the case meaning if you tried to open it you would kill your display. To be honest an unlucky fall could have killed it too. Now if Google made a device like this and whacked the latest version of android on there it’d take my fancy.

  3. There is a real market for affordable large hires E-ink displays. I am an EE and read a lot of technical documents and data sheets that invariably come in A4 or Letter-sixed .pdf format (more and more these documents are sowing up, sadly, in color). I find current back-lit LCD devices tiresome, the devices are too heavy, and the battery life is too short. There has to be a better way.

  4. “a high-resolution 220 x 1650 pixel”
    This has a typo – should be 2200 x 1650…

  5. I’ve been waiting years for an inexpensive large e-ink device. Fingers crossed.
