Barnes & Noble calls the NOOKcolor a $249 color eBook reader, but hackers have been doing their best to turn it into a full-fledged Android tablet since day one. Now they’re also working to turn it into a phone… of sorts.

Out of the box, the tablet supports WiFi, but not Bluetooth. But the latest build of the CyonagenMod 7 operating system for the NOOKcolor enables the dormant Bluetooth functionality of the tablet’s wireless chip. That means you can pair the tablet with a Bluetooth headset and listen to music — or make voice calls using Android’s SIP phone capabilities.

Sure you’ll still need a WiFi connection to make calls. But it’s amazing just how versatile this 7 inch tablet is becoming.

  1. Hey Brad, thanks for covering this development with the Nook Color. I have my Think Outside Stowaway bluetooth keyboard pairing up nicely. The downside of the bluetooth support seems to be range, but I am not complaining.

    1. Hello,
I’ve rooted my NookColor with CM7 and I tried pairing my Think Outside Stowaway BT keyboard and the Nook discovers the keyboard but it will not pair. Would it be to much to ask you how you were able to complete the pairing? Thank you very much.

      1. I’m finding the same issue where the Nook Color discovers the Think Outside Stowaway keyboard and asks for the pass code, but nothing is entered when it is typed on the keyboard.

        1. Yes, that is exactly what happens to me when I try to pair the two.

    2. I have heard or learned that the antenna for the Bluetooth is not installed. I have noticed that you must be right next to the Nook Color table to achieve pairing and connection.

  2. I got the Nook Color as a gift a few months back. Rooted it, loaded up a custom ROM and haven’t looked back. It’s so versatile that it’s pretty much sidelined my netbook for nearly all tasks. When I need more computing power, I turn to my full-size laptop or desktop. I can’t see spending more on a true Android tablet when this is such a viable and affordable option.
