Last month, Barnes & Noble launched their two newest tablets — the Nook HD and Nook HD+ — in the UK alongside the Nook Simple Touch eReaders. The Android-based tablets have high resolution displays that are perfect for watching HD video. Sadly, when the Nooks first went on sale, UK customers didn’t have access to B&N’s Nook Video service. That changes today.

Barnes & Noble announced that owners in the UK how have access to films and television episodes in the company’s Nook Video catalog. Said catalog is also getting bigger thanks to partnerships with BBC Worldwide, HBO, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, STARZ, Warner Bros. Entertainment and more.

B&N NOOK HD and NOOK HD+

One of the cooler aspects of Nook Video is the ability to connect an UltraViolet account to the Nook Cloud service so you can watch the digital versions of movies purchased on Blu-ray and DVD. This is also coming to the UK — B&N claims they’re the first UltraViolet digital retailer in this region.

Nook HD and HD+ owners can shop for Blu-rays right from the device and then watch the digital version of the movie right away. Just as with pure digital purchases, you can access UV content wherever you are with any Nook device connected to your account. B&N also promised that Nook Video apps for other platforms are coming.

Nook Videos are available in standard definition as well as HD and owners can either stream them over Wi-Fi or download to the device for offline watching. If you’d like to watch your videos on a larger screen — say in a hotel room — B&N sells an adapter that allows for output to an HDTV via na HDMI cable.

The Nook Video service brings the Nook HD up to par with the Kindle Fire HD as far as video offerings. Both are compatible with Netflix and Hulu Plus as well, making for capable mobile media slates.
