Barnes & Noble has been giving mixed signals regarding plans for future NOOK tablets. The latest NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ tablets are some of the cheapest decent tablets on the market, and this summer the company suggested it would discontinue its tablet line… only to later clarify that B&N would continue to design tablets, but they might be built by other hardware partners.

Now it looks like we may have some details about B&N’s latest tablet design. An unannounced device showed up at the GFXBench website recently, and it appears to have an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor.

The tablet is described as a Barnes & Noble BNTV800 device with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software, a processor that runs from 51 MHz to 1810 MHz, and which features a 1620 x 1008 pixel display — but GFXBench usually gets the screen resolutions a little wrong, since it doesn’t count the pixels that are reserved for the on-screen buttons.

In other words, it’s possible that we’re looking at a tablet with 1620 x 1200 pixel screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

There’s no way to tell what the screen size the tablet will have or how much it will cost. But it looks like B&N is trying to keep up with Amazon. The latest Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablets feature speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors and high resolution displays.

  3. Hopefully it keeps the Google Play support and microSD slot. Add cameras on top of that beautiful display and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

  4. I’d love to see the new Nook come with a Tegra 4. I was actually thinking the other day that a partnership with Nvidia would be one of B&N’s best moves. I do hope they go with a simpler UI, though, and release regular Android updates, like most manufacturers. Here’s hoping the new Nooks are as awesome as I hope 🙂

  5. I have a Nook HD+ and really my only complaint is that it’s a bit sluggish. The 9″ size is perfect, the 1920 x 1280 res is excellent, the aspect ratio is much better than 16×9 and not so square as 4×3 – again – perfect. The cost at $149 – fantastic. The OS was okay but it was easy to drop CM10.1 on it. If they just put JB on it with a custom Nook app and bookshelf on the home screen I would probably just leave that alone.

    So honestly if they were merely to update that with a Tegra 4 chip I would buy a new one or two.
