Apple tends to come out with a new iPhone every year, so it’s hardly surprising that we’re starting to hear rumors about this year’s model. But the folks at 9 to 5 Mac received a tip that the next iPhone could have a new processor and 1GB of RAM, or twice as much as the iPhone 4S.

They also found evidence in a build of the iOS 5.1 operating system that Apple is working on a new iPod touch.

While there’s no solid information about the new iPod touch, there’s a good chance Apple will upgrade the processor.

Right now the iPod touch is the only current-generation iOS product with a single core Apple A4 processors. All current iPhone and iPad models have faster dual-core A5 or A5x processors.

A faster chip would give the little device a little more gaming power, which could come in handy since the iPod touch is one of the world’s most popular handheld gaming devices.

Apple typically rolls out a new iPod touch every year, but the only change between the company’s 2010 and 2011 iPod touch lineup was the addition of a model with a white case, so the iPod touch is probably overdue for some sort of update.

What would you like to see in the 5th generation iPod touch?

  1. I don’t really care about the camera on my ipod. I just want a bigger screen, and the same processor as the iphone 5!

  2. Who cares what they release? Whatever it is, I will buy it so I have the latest, greatest, most-technologically advanced gadget in the world! Apple knows what I want, before I want it, and knows what is best for me. I don’t question it.

  3. More storage capacity – iPod Classic still relevant largely because of high capacity.
No longer just MP3 player…64GB couldn’t even hold my music collection, let alone the other media people carry these days,…

    1.  It’s part of their strategy as they want you to use the cloud and thus help them profit through their services.

On the plus side, it won’t be long before you’ll be seeing more WiFi enabled portable hard drives that you can link to and give any device all the capacity it needs.

  4. does apple tv count a current generation iOS product with a single core a4? i completely forget myself, but i think it is?

    1. ah. it’s a special single core a5, how odd. maybe that one is the next ipod touch chip?

  5. A better camera would be good. Apple could be just a few years away from completely obliterating the market for point and shoot cameras. A folded optics zoom lens would be a big step up for any Apple product.

  6. Ideally I’d like to see the ipod touch really be the “phone without the phone parts”. Meaning same camera, same screen quality, etc. As it stands the camera is barely a step above no camera, and the screen doesn’t compare to the iphone in color/brightness.

But what I’m expecting is maybe a processor bump and thats it. Apple hasn’t had a serious competitor in a while so why should they push the specs up?=

    1. Why should they push the specs up? because apple is a company that (tries to) go the extra mile!

  7. This just in: Apple likely to update product as per it’s usual release cycle
