Netflix for Honeycomb

Just over a month ago Netflix updated its Android app to add support for most phones running Android 2.2 or Android 2.3. Now the company has moved a step up the numeric chain with an update that adds support for most tablets running Android 3.0 and up.

You’ll need to be in the US, Canada, or Latin America to use the Netflix app — and you’ll also need to sign up for a Netflix subscription. But if you meet those requirements, you can now stream thousands of TV shows and movies on a number of tablets including the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Acer Iconia Tab A500, Motorola XOOM, or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

In other words, Lenovo’s Android tablets just lost their exclusivity on Netflix streaming.

The bad news is that the update seems to cause problems for the HP TouchPad with CyanogenMod’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread build. While I was able to watch Netflix videos on the tablet last week, I installed the latest Netflix app today and was able to listen to audio from various movies… but I couldn’t see any video.

Netflix 1.5 for Android is available as a free download from the Android Market.

Update: Netflix 1.5.1 is now available, and it works beautifully on the HP TouchPad with CyanogenMod 7.1.
