You know how we reported last week that it looked like Google was testing a Netflix plugin for Chrome OS? Yep, it looks like that’s happening. Google has announced that the Acer and Samsung Chromebooks will both be able to stream video from Netflix and Hulu when they launch on June 15th.

It’s still not clear how the Netflix plugin will work. The online video service normally requires the Microsoft Silverlight plugin to stream video — but Silverlight isn’t available for Linux, and Chrome OS is based on Linux.

Hulu, on the other hand, typically uses Adobe Flash, which Chrome does support. It’s also possible that one or both of the online video sites could offer up videos using HTML5 or another web standard specifically for computers running Chrome OS.

Unfortunately Netflix and Hulu only stream television shows and movies to viewers in the US.

  1. Actually, The CR-48 *MIGHT* just BARELY be able too handle the HD streaming. it would be a trick though. Using Both threads of the CPU+the GPU, with NO other tabs open, running on a low-level API, they MAY be able too pull it off.

  2.  Hope the CR-48 gets it as well.  I know it won’t be able to handle the HD streams, but considering some of the ancient PCs I’ve had Netflix running on it should be able to eek something out.

    1. The Cr-48 should get the same updates that a Chromebook does. No worries 🙂
