Remember how Asus tried to tell customers that upgrading the RAM in an Eee PC would violate their warranty? Eventually Asus backed down from that position (in the US and some other countries where the laws were on the customers’ sides anyway). But now it looks like we’re seeing the same thing all over again with the MSI Wind.

Bit-Tech reports that MSI is letting US customers know that RAM upgrades can void their warranties. But while most Asus Eee PC models have a RAM access panel on the back of the unit (meaning you can pop open a door and replace the RAM without disassembling your computer), the MSI Wind does not. That means it takes some minor surgery to replace or upgrade the RAM, and MSI is apparently telling customers that for this reason upgrading the RAM is a warranty violation.

In the UK, Bit-Tech suggests you can call MSI and register your product before upgrading the RAM and your local warranty will still be good. But your global warranty will be void. Because for some reason MSI has decided to go and divide the warranty up into two parts. Go figure. It looks like this whole “register your product” thing isn’t available to non-UK customers.
