HP’s new Z2 Mini Workstation may not be ready for virtual reality, but MSI has a compact desktop PC that it says is up to the task.
The new MSI Trident is a desktop computer that packs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics, a custom cooling system and a 230 watt power supply.
The computer measures 13.6″ x 9.2″ 2.8″ and weighs about 7 pounds, making the gaming PC about the size of a game console like the Xbox One.
At first glance, I thought the MSI Trident seemed like a non-backpack version of the recently announced MSI VR One, but a peek at the design and spec sheet suggests this is a completely different PC.
The new system should be available this month, and MSI will offer the Trident gaming PC with a choice of Core i5-6400 and Core i7-6700 processor options. It supports up to 32GB of DDR4-2133 MHz RAM and has two SODIMM slots.
There’s a 2.5 inch drive bay for a hard drive or SSD and an M.2 SATA SSD slot.
The computer features 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2 and Gigabit Ethernet and features a USB 3.1 Type-C port, six USB 3.1 Type-A ports, four USB 2.0 Type-A ports, HDMI output, and mic and headphone jacks.
It also features a “Silent Storm Cooling 2” system which separates key components of the PC into separate chambers with a fan helping keep things from overheating in either one.
