As they generally go, leakers got the jump on Motorola and gave us a fairly detailed idea of what the Moto Z2 Force would look like. Now that it’s been officially announced, it looks like the leaks were right on the money.
The second-generation Z Force is built around an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor clocked at 2.35 GHz. It packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage and supports micro SD cards up to 2TB. Some regions will also see variants that feature 128GB of internal storage and dual SIM slots.
On the back of the aluminum-clad Z2 Force there’s a fingerprint sensor to simplify authentication. Perched above it are dual cameras with 12MP sensors and there’s a 5 MP ƒ/2.2 camera on the front for snapping selfies. The phone’s 5.5-inch quad HD display is guaranteed not to shatter, so expect to see a flood of YouTube videos putting that claim to the test very soon.
Like the other members of the Moto Z line-up, the Z2 Force is compatible with all MotoMods.
The Z2 Force’s battery’s gotten quite a bit smaller, down to 2730mAh from the first-gen’s 3500mAh. Motorola says it still provides enough juice for a full day of use and the Z2 Force did get much thinner and lighter. Motorola managed to shave almost a full millimeter off the profile (it’s 6.1mm thick) and drop 20 grams (to 143g). They also ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack, which means you’ll need to plug in the included USB-C adapter if you want to use your existing wired headphones.
Motorola is offering the Z2 Force in three colors. Take your pick from Super Black, Fine Gold, and Lunar Grey — which is a Verizon exclusive. The Z2 Force will ship with Android 7.1.1 on board, but a quick upgrade to Android O is promised. You can pre-order one now for $799 directly from Motorola and it starts shipping on August 10. Get in early and Motorola will ship you a free Insta-Share Projector mod, too.

Motorola just can’t seem to find a balance with their Z phones.
1st Gen: they were all mid-range phones, and didn’t have enough power or features to justify their prices (the lack of 802.11ac was the biggest one for me). But as a major plus, they did have a few models with really nice big batteries.
2nd Gen: Most of the models still lack 802.11ac (the Z2 Force is the only one that has it), the batteries are not just smaller than big-batteries of the 1st Gen, they are smaller than the average smartphone. Also, the headphone jack is now gone too.
Get your shit together, Motorola. Give me a flagship-spec phone with Motomods, 802.11ac, headphone jack, and a 3000+ mAh battery.
Also, they need to go back to the drawing board for their Hasselblad camera attachment. I’m not spending $300 on a camera attachment that has an f3.5-6.3 aperture. $300 is also not something I’d spend on a camera that essentially has a 2 year lifespan (my Smartphone is going to be obsolete in 2 years, what do I do with my useless camera now?).
They have a long history of add-on devices. Sometimes it was as simple as a new back to fit in a larger OEM battery. Or even in the pre-smartphone days, remember the Startec Clipon Organizer? At least you didn’t need to have the phone for that to work!

Hmm, no headphone jack, sub 3000 mAH battery and not waterproof (nanocoating resistant). Unless the moto mods are amazing, for $799 this seems way about the ideal price point.
I’m really happy with my Moto G5 Plus, and at $239 a pop I basically have two screens I can break in case I manage to break my first smartphone screen ever. And I also probably get 2-3x the battery life.
I should add it’s my first non-flagship smartphone, although the one before that was a year old flagship design. There’s little reason to spend that much money on a phone now.
