As expected, Motorola is updating its Moto G line of smartphones with the new Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus. And now we know what the S stands for: “special edition.”
The new phones share a lot of DNA with the Moto G5 series phones that launched earlier this year. But the G5S series phones feature metal unibody design and improved cameras.
The Moto G5S and G5S Plus are coming to the US this fall, but they’ll be available in select countries starting this month with prices starting at 249 Euros for the smaller model and 299 Euros for the bigger Moto G5S Plus.

The Moto G5S features a 5.2 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery with fast charging support (get up to 5 hours of run time from a 15 minute charge). It also has a 16MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus and a 5MP front-facing camera with an LED flash.
Motorola’s Moto G5S plus has a 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display and the same 3,000 mAh battery as its smaller sibling. But just about everything else is a step up.
This model has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, support for up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and dual 13MP rear cameras (one of which shoots in color, and the other of which is a black and white camera). There’s an 8MP front-facing camera with an LED flash.
Looking for something cheaper? The Moto E4 Plus is coming to America this month. It goes up for pre-order starting August 3rd with prices starting at $180 and the phone should be available in stores starting August 11th.
Highly recommend against this company, we own 4 devices(Moto G4/G4 Play) in the family and service is sub par at best. “the fastest to update” promise is a big BS, Nougat update was pushed now god knows how many times and no update in the horizon(still on Android 6.01). you have to remember that this is not Motorola anymore, this is a Chinese company with different mentality that you and I are used too, the forum is being terrorized by the moderators they delete any comments that speaks against the regime, no answers, all highly secretive, and if you complain you will be deleted and banned. For example see the following thread which was “resolved” back in December with thousands of comments(read some of them) and 130 pages. Buyers by aware what you are getting yourself into….

I’m confused by the G5S’ 420 processor. Is there a G5 that has that level of processor, or just the G5 Plus with the 625? Why the low end processor in the G5S? That just seems like it would confuse people.
Not that this answers your question, but that was a typo: it actually has a Snapdragon 430 processor, not an SD420.
There is a standard Moto G5 available in some markets and it has the SD430. I know it was not released in the US.
I very much doubt many potential Moto G buyers know what processors are in which of their phones.
Same comment for almost all phone owners.
