Fitness tracker company Misfit makes a number of products that can track steps, sleep quality, and other stats. Now the company is patnering with Speedo on a line of trackers designed specifically for swimmers.

The new Speedo Shine joins the Misfti Shine, Flash, Flash Link, and other members of the Misfit family. The $80 Speedo Shine will be available exclusively from SpeedoUSA.com and the Apple Store starting September.

Here’s the thing though: you could probably just save money and just buy a Misfit Shine for $70. It’s also a activity tracker that’s waterproof up to 50 meters, and which can monitor your swimming stats.

That said, Misfit says the Speedo Shine has been “validated by Speedo in-pool testing” to ensure that its lap-tracking algorithm is accurate and works “for all stroke types.” It will also be able to work with the Speedo Fit mobile app as well as the Misfit app for iOS or Android.

The Speedo Shine is a silver-colored device made of aircraft-grade aluminum and it’s designed to worn in a watch-like wristband. In addition to swim tracking, it can monitor activities including walking, running, and cycling. Like other Misfit tracker, it has no screen and a battery that’s designed to last for months rather than days.

  1. Similar in concept with the Moov I guess – record the motion during swimming and analyse later. Note you’d need 2 devices (one for each wrist). That said the screen shots look quite simple, so perhaps its only counting strokes and guessing calories.

The Flash is somewhat cheaper than the Shine, although it (apparently) contains the same innards.

  2. I tried tracking swimming activity with a Misfit Flash back in April of 2015. It added no valuable information. I started and stopped the timer for the activity myself – so I have no experience with whether it could accurately detect that I was swimming. Even after I told it I was swimming, it could not track number of laps or accurately track distance. The distance that the app reported was so far off, I believe all it did was estimate distance using nothing but the amount of time I spent performing the activity.

I sure hope Speedo made sure the Shine, with this software, can do more than the Flash was able to do about 4 months ago. I believe good software could help, but I’m skeptical the software is good enough only 4 months after my disappointing experience.
