Microsoft has updated its suite of Office apps for desktop computers. Office 2016 is now available for Windows, and Mac users can now buy Office 2016 without a subscription (the Mac version had been released earlier this year, but it was only available to Office 365 subscribers).

The latest version of Office has a refined user interface, new communication and collaboration tools, and tight integration with cloud storage.

Microsoft continues to push its Office 365 subscription service, which means that customers can pay $7 per month or $70 per year to use the latest version of Office on one computer and one tablet or $10/$100 for use on up to 5 computers and up to 5 tablets.

But you can also buy Office 2016 Home & Student outright for a one-time payment of $150. That gets you the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, but does not include Publisher, Access, or Outlook. Those are only included if you opt for Office 365, the $230 Office Home & Business 2016 suite or the $400 Office Professional 2016 suite.

Of course, you could save a bundle and use free office alternatives such as LibreOffice, Google Docs, or even the free Office web apps. But if you need 100% compatibility with Office for work or school, or just need features that aren’t available in any alternatives, the latest version of Microsoft Office does bring some new features to the tablet, including:

  • Real-time collaboration with multiple authors in Word documents
  • Skype for Business lets you chat or make calls while editing documents, and use screen sharing to show your documents to other users in real-time
  • Tell Me search makes it easier to find commands you’re looking for when you type what it is you want to do
  • New chart types in Excel

  3. How do you upgrade from Office 2013 to 2016, if you have Office 365?

      1. I have an Office 365 subscription because of my school, when I go to the “My Account” URL it says that my account is not linked to a Office 365. This is because it is logged on to my Microsoft Account, but does not let me log onto my school account. Do you know if Office 2016 is available for school Office 365 subscribers?

        1. It should be available for all subscribers, sounds like you just have a account log on issue that you may have to check with your school to fix… maybe it requires you to use the school network, for example, with their setup…
