Windows 8 goes on sale just after midnight tonight, when it will be available for download or purchase in stores. Hundreds of new computers will also be available for purchase running Microsoft’s new operating system.
Exactly how many? According to Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky, more than 1,000 PCs have been certified for Windows 8.
That number likely includes brand new PCs as well as existing models which have been updated to run the new software. Sinofsky says prices for some of those new computers will be as low as $300.
The big news is some of the new form factors we’ve seen including hybrid tablets with detachable screens, rotating screens, or even multiple screens.
We’ve also seen traditional laptops outfitted with touchscreen displays, and even desktop computers that act like big tablets.
While the new Windows 8 Start Screen and touch-friendly user interface looks like it was designed for tablets, you can also use a keyboard and mouse or touchpad. Microsoft says when you first run Windows 8 you’ll see a tutorial which should make it clear how to navigate the new operating system.
According to Microsoft, the operating system also uses less memory than Windows 7 and offers improved battery life and faster boot times.
But honestly, if you want to get the most out of the new OS, it seems like you’re going to want a computer with a touchscreen.
Using a mouse does seem pretty clunky in Windows 8 when compared to using your fingers. Too bad using your fingers on clamshell notebooks and desktop monitors isn’t ideal either.
It seems Windows 8 is emphasizing handheld tablet use where control on other devices gets less features or requires more actions.
guess I will be staying up late to download.
