Meizu’s new top-of-the-line smartphone features a 5.2 inch full HD AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, and Android 6.0 software. But there are a few other things that really make the Meizu Pro 6 stand out.
It’s one of the first Android phones to feature a pressure-sensitive “force touch” display. And it’s the only device to ship with a MediaTek Helio X25 deca-core CPU.
That’s not really saying all that much though, since the Helio X25 isn’t all that different from the Helio X20 chip used in a few other phones that sell for about half the price.
Still, with a starting price of RMB 2499, or about $386, the Meizu Pro 6 isn’t exactly expensive by modern smartphone standards. And it does offer some pretty solid specs:
- 5.2 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel Super AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass III
- 32GB or 64GB of eMMC 5.1 NAND flash storage
- 21MP Sony IMX230 rear camera and 5MP front camera
- 2,560 mAh battery
- USB 3.1 Type-C
- Dual-band 802.11ac WiFi
- Dual SIM with support for LTE Cat 6
- Fingerprint reader
- Pressure-sensitive “3D Press” display
The MediaTek Helio X25 processor features:
- Two 2.5 GHz ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores
- Four 2 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores
- Four 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores
- 850 MHz ARM Mali-T880MP4 graphics
MediaTek’s Helio X20 chip has the same basic specs, but the top speed for the Cortex-A72 CPU cores is 2.3 GHz and the GPU is clocked at 850 MHz, up from 780 MHz for the X20.
Overall, the phone looks good on paper. But it’s oddly a bit of a downgrade from last year’s Meizu Pro 5 in some ways.
The older model had a Samsung Exynos 7420 octa-core processor, which AnandTech notes should offer better performance and better efficiency. The new phone also has a smaller battery (although it also has a smaller display, which might help offset the reduced battery capacity by reducing power consumption.
Like most Meizu phones, this model will initially be available exclusively in China.
