This morning AMD announced it was partnering with PC makers to create an ecosystem for mini PCs with AMD Ryzen Embedded processors.

The Maxtang VHFP30 is… something different. Yes, it’s a small form-factor computer with an AMD Ryzen chip… but this little computer from a Chinese PC maker features a 15 watt, Ryzen 5 2500U laptop-class processor rather than an embedded processor.

Spotted this week by FanlessTech, Maxtang fanless mini PC is available from AliExpress for about $354 and up.

The starting price gets you a barebones model with no memory or storage, but you can pay extra to get up to 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. The system can also support a 2.5 inch hard drive.

Other features include an aluminum chassis, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, mic and headphone jacks, an RS-232 serial port, a USB Type-C port, and dual Gigabit Ethernet jacks. It also supports WiFi and Bluetooth (the promotional materials are inconsistent, so it’s unclear whether WiFi tops out at 802.11n or 802.11ac).

While Maxtang isn’t a company I’m familiar with, odds are now that a first fanless mini PC with an AMD Ryzen (non-embedded) processor has arrived, we could see other models in the future.

  1. I hope to see more mini PCs like this. I would like to replace my old Shuttle XS35V4 with Bay Trail chipset. But I would like to have DVD ROM. This seems to be a big problem. More then 90% of mini PCs or micro-ITX cases lack the ability to include it. I could buy an external one, but that certainly won’t look nice as a HTPC.

Do you know a good option for a fanless HTPC case with DVD drive or a miniPC?

    1. Almost impossible these days to find a HTPC optical drive bay case the size of Shuttle XS35V4 which is 1.7 liters!

Any way, something closer could be:

      1. ITS-0809 Mini-ITX 9 “Half-1U Case with BR-25HD Mounting Bracket For 2.5” HD On Slim CDR Slot.
The case seems to have 2.2 liters, just a little bigger than the XS35V4.

      or

      2. Also the CHIEFTEC IX-03B case has a “Slim Line DVD Kit” which can be mounted, above or by the case (it depends on mounting position of the case).
But this add-on increases the total size of the case. The add-on code is MK-35DV.
You will find pictures and some examples of installation on the manufacturer’s website.

I replied to your comment because I just replaced my five year old
Shuttle XS35V4, the same as yours, with something new.
I did not use XS35V4 with optical drive.
From the beginning of use I replaced this with PHD2 accessory,
      for a second SSD drive.

The configuration that I build based on my criteria (1. fanless + smaller, 2. low cost) is:

Motherboard: ASRock J5005 MB Intel Gemini Lake (~ 135)
      Case: Chieftec IX-03B – 220mm x 197mm x 63mm aproximately 2.7 liter (~ 30)
      Power supply: picoPSU 80 12V DC-DC ATX Mini-ITX 80W (~ 25)
Power adapter: Salcar LED power pack 72W 12V (~ 14)
      Memory: Crucial CT16G4SFD824A 16GB x 2 (total 32 GB) ((~ 120))

      Not necessary but I added:
USB Hub: ORICO USB3.0 Clip-type HUB (MH4PU) (the case does not have a frontal USB ports) (~ 20)
      Wireless adapter: 1733Mbps Intel 9560 9560NGW Wireless-AC NGFF Key E BT5.0 Wifi Card + MHF4 Antenna (~ 18)
(I have replaced the external antennas with 1 Pair Laptop IPEX MHF4 M.2 WiFi Wireless Card Antenna for NGFF Intel Aerial) (~ 3)

      135 + 30 + 25 + 14 + 120 + 20 + 18 + 3 ~ 365 Eur

The parts were bought from amazon, ebay and localy.

For storage I just took from the Shuttle XS35V4 my old Crucial MX100 256GB SSD.

      The prices are a little lower now, January 2020;
the prices above was in November 2019.

      I use that configuration for two months and everything is ok;
the system is stable, the performance is visibly increased compared to “old” Celeron J1900 system from Shuttle.
I can say it is a superb mini configuration could be used perfectly for day by day tasks, and more.

If you didn’t already build something maybe the information could help you.

By the way, for what reason do you need to have an optical drive?

  2. Good to see a familiar processor, I took a laptop using this chip for a long spin. Its a bit shocking this class processor can be “fanless”, it did generate fair amount of heat, but im thinking its a trick of sorts, if wattage is abnormally clipped then performance likewise would also. But i had no complaints in performance dept especially for price, it’d be interesting to run performance suites on it.

    1. Wait, it’s fanless?
I totally missed that. Looks like it will give competition against the Ryzen V1605B found in the Udoo Bolt V8 single-board computer!!
