Password management service LastPass provides a way to generate and save secure passwords and access them across a range of devices including desktop web browsers and mobile phones and tablets.

Now the company, which was founded in 2008, has been acquired by LogMeIn, a company that provides remote desktop, web conferencing  and cloud storage and file sharing solutions.

LastPass says it plans to “continue to build and improve LastPass for our free, Premium, and Enterprise customers,” which should come as good news to anyone worried that the free version of the service might be on the way out. LogMeIn discontinued its own free remote desktop service in 2014, after all.

The company also says it’ll be rolling out new features and updates in the coming months. For instances, LogMeIn acquired identity management service Meldium last year, and plans to integrate its features with LogMein, although the two services will continue to be available as standalone products for now.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that LogMeIn will continue to offer a free version of LastPass forever. But as long as competitors like Dashlane continue to offer a free tier, it’d probably be silly for LogMeIn to discontinue the free version of LastPass.

Right now anyone can use LastPass for free on a desktop or mobile device. But if you want to synchronize your data between unlimited devices, you’ll need to pay for a Premium account, which costs $12 per year.

Don’t want to trust your data to LastPass/LogMeIn? You could roll your own solution by synchronizing data from KeePass, 1Password, or another local password manager across multiple devices using a cloud storage service like Dropbox.

  1. Its already been working less than perfect with firefox… you can set it to “autofill” as much as you want, one time it’ll autofill, the next time it won’t.

It detects “password changes” in sites where the password did not change etc.

Still, it was really useful most of the time.

I guess the Lastpass guys couldn’t make it work financially. Lets see what the new guys do with it.

And if LagMeIn tries to fix monetization by killing the free, basic version and makes it subscripton for all, don’t mind me, cause I’ll be going back to using the browser to manage my passwords.
