Linux4one is a custom Linux distribution designed for the Acer Aspire One netbook. It’s sort of like Ubuntu Eee or Eeebuntu for the Asus Eee PC. But when we first looked at Linux4one the other day, there was one major problem: It was only available in Italian.

Now the developers say they plan to release an updated version with English localization features by Tuesday.

Of course, you can install the standard version of Ubuntu on an Aspire One by yourself, but then you’ll need to apply a bunch of tweaks to get all of the hardware and software to work properly. Linux4one takes away all the guesswork and leaves you with a system running Ubuntu and the Ubuntu Netbok Remix program launcher with support for the WiFi, webcam, and other hardware.

The OS is based on Ubuntu 8.04 and there are no plans to update to the newer Ubuntu 8.10 release anytime soon, which makes some sense since Ubuntu 8.04 is what Ubuntu’s development team calls a “long term support” or LTS release.

  1. Hi,

Can anyone confirm this working one AAO?
If so, could someone please educate me as per how EXACTLY install a fully functional ENGLISH version of this OS? I am sure many of my fellow AAO & Linux newbies would appreciate this.

Thank You in advance, and congrats to the developers a big Thanks from every AAO user!! 🙂

  2. wifi does not work like they claim for the acer one. a bit disappointing considering the time i invested downloading and installing the os.

  3. The RC2 has been released today. You need to install in Italian the distro, after installation you have to go in the GNOME Localization Settings Manager and enable and download the english language packages.

    Ciao and goodbye
