Linutop has been producing tiny low power Linux-based desktop computers from the last few years, and now the company has introduced its fourth generation product called the Linutop 4. Creative, I know.

Spec-wise, the new model doesn’t actually look all that different from the Linutop 3. It still has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory and 2GB of flash storage. But the new model is much smaller and lighter. The Linutop 3 weighed in at a hefty 4.5 pounds, while the new model weighs just 2.1 pounds and measures just 7.1 ” x 7.9″ x 1.4″.

The Linutop 4 runs a customized version of Ubuntu Linux called Linutop 4 and comes with Firefox 3.6, OpenOffice.org 3.2, VLC Media Player, and a number of other apps.

The computer has VGA and DVI ports and supports external monitors with resolutions up to 1920 x 1440 pxiesl. There are 5 USB 2.0 ports, 2 SATA connectors, a 2.5 inch drive bay, PCIe slot, and Gigabit Ethernet. The Linutop 4 features a fanless design and uses just 14 watts of power.

Unfortunately the Linutop 4 doesn’t come cheap. The latest model runs 400 Euros, or about $575 US. But you can still pick up a Linutop 2with a VIA C7 processor, 512MB of RAM and 1GB of storage for just 280 Euros ($403). That model uses just 8W of power and weighs just 1.3 pounds.

    Quite weird, they cost alot, pointless to make one with Intel chipset if they are running Linuxs, why not ARM then? Cheap is the purpose of these laptops, isnt it?

  4. As others, I just don’t see the selling point here.

    The Tegra2 based TrimSlce is cheaper and has similar computing performance but consumes MUCH less. Can also house an SSD/notebook-hdd.

    I wonder when someone come out with an OMAP4 nettop. Even with the Pandaboard.

    $575? Is that a dual-core Atom, at least? Why isn’t at least a dual-core, low power Athlon?

    I predict a slow. painful death.

  7. I was thinking, when reading the title, “Yay! A new $100 alternative to Windows/Mac!” $575? For an *Atom*? Is it bullet proof or something?

  8. yea this seems very expensive. it should cost less than an atom powered netbook (~$250) as those come with a screen/battery/trackpad/keyboard, all of which add to the overall price of a unit. strip those out and it would be what $150 tops?

    i mean.. with an atom motherboard and powertop you can get that power consumption with no problem…

    and a lot cheaper than 575 bucks..
