Linpus is rolling out a new version of its Android-based operating system designed to run on tablets, netbooks, and notebooks with x86 processors. It’s based on Google Android 4.0, and the notebook version adds support for hardware that you wouldn’t normally find on an Android tablet.
Linpus made a little bit of a name for itself a few years ago when Acer selected Linpus Linux Lite as the operating system for the first Acer netbooks. But it didn’t take long for PC makers to stop shipping Linux netbooks, instead using Windows XP and eventually Windows 7 Starter Edition.
So last year Linpus added a Linpus Lite Android Edition to its lineup, allowing companies to load a customized version of Android on tablets or other hardware.
The new version of Linpus Lite Android is based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and supports common notebook and netbook hardware including HDMI, LAN, WiFI, Bluetooth, VGA, and sleep functions.
The company is also working on a version of its Android software designed for Intel’s low power Medfield chips which will likely power future phones and tablets.
