The Clockwork GameShell is a handheld game system that looks like a Nintendo GameBoy… when it’s fully assembled. But there are a few things that set the GameShell apart from other gaming devices.
It runs open source software and it features a modular design. Clockwork sent me one earlier this year and it took me around a half hour to assemble the system and start playing games.
Thanks to the modular design you can also upgrade the hardware — Clockwork recently released a new core module featuring double the RAM and an HDMI port. You can either buy it as part of a whole new kit or just by the new module and put it in the original GameShell.
Don’t have an original GameShell? Maybe I can help. It’s time for a Liliputing giveaway.
As is usually the case with Liliputing giveaways, what I’m offering here is a lightly used device… but this time that means that I’m kind of robbing you of some of the experience.
I’ve already assembled the GameShell from its component parts. While I could take it apart before shipping it, it’d be kind of tough to put some of these components back in the box. So I’m going to ship an assembled GameShell to the winner of this contest and you can do whatever you’d like with it.
That involves upgrading to the newer CPU module, installing games or emulators, or just generally mucking around in the user forums to get ideas for things to do with the GameShell.
Anyway, here’s how to enter for a chance to win:
Update: This contest has ended. Congratulations to our winner, Paul Johnson!

This thing looks fun! I love retro gaming — I’d probably rather play an NES/SNES emulated game than a new one! I like that they made it a DIY device, too.

I’d like to see one of these in the flesh. I’ve tried a few different emulation devices over the years, but none of them have really hit that sweet spot of capabilities and ease-of-use yet.
Sweet!

That would be great for running NES and Mega Drive games.

Thanks so much!
I would love to take this thing for a spin!
I live off-grid with no electricity and got my first RPi this autumn and I’m loving using it as my off-grid PC for stuff like video game asset creation in GIMP! I just wish i could do Unity game development on it, but not a chance… I’m gonna need to break down and replace my broken laptop for that.
beep
me please!
I’d like one
I saw those in some youtube videos and the price kept me away, but I cant say no to a price of $0
Definitely a neat little handheld.
I have a 13 year old that would love this.
If I won this awesome otem, I will dedicate my life to mastering its many pleasures. And eating pizza.
Thanks for the invite
I hope more of this modular, open source stuff will continue to come on the market. Displays seem to be the least standardized, so I’m always curious to see how these modules interact with the LCD.
Hey, gamers.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Very cool thing to do!
I was just looking into this thing recently, which I’m sure means I am destined to win this unless I am not. Destiny can be cruel.
Count me in, I’d love another gift for being good this year.
Been looking at building something like this for a while, but the kits I’ve found have always left something to be desired. I’ll check out GameShell.
Could be a good basis for some mods…
thanks for the chance to win

Always fun to win a giveaway!
This is awesome of you! I’ve been eyeing up the GameShell for a while now and have only held off due to the cost.

This unit is awesome, you should do a Review of the Odroid-Go as well. It is the cheapest and quickest handheld retro console tbh. And rather amazing too.
