The Amazon Fire TV Stick is a $39 device you can plug into your TV to stream music, videos, photos, and other content from Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and more. Not only has the Fire TV Stick I picked up last year largely replaced my Chromecast… I find myself not even using my HTPC (Home Theater PC) very often anymore.

This week Amazon announced it will soon roll out a software update for the Fire TV Stick that adds support for WiFi networks that require web authentication, among other things.

But it turns out there are a number of other changes that Amazon didn’t mention. The folks at AFTVnews found many of them.

Here’s a roundup of tech news from around the web.

  • Here’s just about everything that’s new in the latest Amazon Fire TV Stick firmware
Among other things, there’s no a restart option in the settings, a shortcut menu with the time and options for screen mirroring, sleep, and settings, a concealed user interface for entering PIN numbers privately, and support for browsing and searching Prime Music Playlists. [AFTVnews]
  • Ubuntu 15.04 final beta released
The next version of Ubuntu Linux is due out on April 23rd. You can take the latest pre-release version for a test drive now… or install it as your primary operating system if you like living on (or near) the edge. [Ubuntu]
  • HTC T1H Android tablet on the way?
HTC may be preparing to launch an 8.9 inch tablet with an Allwinner H8 processor, a 2048 x 1536 pixel display, Android 5.0, and HTC BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers. Or maybe this is just a rumor. [MyDrivers]
  • Photos of an unannounced Hisense tablet with slim bezels leaked
Details are scarce, and it’s possible this could be a fake. But it’s one sleek looking tablet… or fake tablet. [GizmoChina]
  • Google Nexus 6 now available in 6 new countries
Want a really big phone and live in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, or Portugal? It’s you’re lucky day. [Android Authority]
  • Pebble Time Kickstarter campaign ends today after raising over $20 million
The company already makes a popular smartwatch and some folks figure they had plenty of money to make a new one… so why use Kickstarter to launch the Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel color watches? Because it gets people like me to keep writing headlines about the record-setting amount of money the team raised, apparently. But seriously, if you want to save a few bucks on a Pebble Time, you’ve only got a few hours left to back the campaign to reserve one at a discounted price. [Kickstarter]

  1. Until it can Google/ChromeCast, its worthless for my usage. Miracast doesn’t cut it. Awaiting the Nvidia Shield Console running Android TV.

  2. My friends say USTVnow is not a supported channel, nor are private channels on Amazon Fire Tvs. Therefore Roku, stick or otherwise is still preferred.

    1. Your friend is wrong. Ustvnow works through kodi on the fire tv or stick. Just a matter of installing the plugin and signing in. You don’t need private channels when you’ve got Kodi plugins and from someone that owns a roku stick and roku 3, the content is vastly superior on the Fire TV with kodi as well as with its ability to sideload.
