Most smartphones on the market have widescreen displays, with aspect ratios of roughly 16:9 or 3:2. But LG’s Vu line of phones takes its cue from old-fashioned televisions and PC monitors, using a 4:3 display.

Last year’s LG Optimus Vu II, for instance, has a 5 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display. Now the company is reportedly working on a Vu iii, with a larger, higher-resolution screen and other premium specs.

The LG Vu III is expected to feature a 5.2 inch, 1280 x 960 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and a 13MP camera.

In other words, it’s a bit like the upcoming LG G2 superphone, but the rectangular screen is a bit closer to being a square.

LG’s Vu smartphones aren’t widely available in the US, but you can usually pick one up from resellers such as Negri Electronics or Overseas Electronics if you really want a phone with a screen that reminds you of your old laptop display.

LG will probably introduce the new Vu III at the IFA trade show in September. There’s no word on when it will hit the streets or how much it will cost.
