The LG G Flex is a smartphone with a 6 inch, curved display. And that might not even be the most unusual thing about it — LG says the rear cover of the phone has a coating of “self healing” elastic, which automatically covers up small scratches.

LG plans to start selling the G Flex in South Korea soon. There’s no word on whether it will be available outside of LG’s home country, but the rest of the specs look pretty decent including a fast processor, support for high-quality audio, and a design which LG says offers better ergonomics.

The G Flex has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 3500mAh battery, and a 2.1MP front-facing camera and 13MP rear camera and support for 24-bit/192 KHz audio playback.

It has a 1280 x 720 pixel OLED display, and the screen (and body of the phone) has a gentle slope so that the top and bottom edges are higher than the center.

On the one hand, this could theoretically make the phone more comfortable to hold up to your head while making a call — on the other hand, not everyone’s head is the same size or shape, so it’ll be interesting to see how the public reacts to the phone.

LG also says the curved display provides an IMAX-like experience when viewing videos — but I suspect you’d have to hold the phone pretty close to your face to confuse it with an IMAX screen.

    1. I share the same sentiment (well, unless you put it in your back pocket, which follows the contour of your gluteus maximus). Nonetheless, if the that’s the only the degree of curvature I would get from either the Galaxy Round or the G Flex, I think I’ll just go for the straight phones for a while and wait for a phone that is entirely bendable. I’m quite confident that it won’t take that long.

  1. Is that a parabolic curve? I wonder if the phone can concentrate light at a given point if shined at the screen surface?

    1. The curvature is too little, the focal point would be pretty far.

      1. Interesting…

I understand there is an enemy attack by sea that is imminent and thought to equip my army with them.

  2. Lol sorry to be a stickler but the “tot he” should be “to the” in the second to last paragraph. Interesting article though. 🙂
