There are plenty of phones with 1080p displays. Over the last few years we’ve seen a lot of QHD models with 2560 x 1440 pixel displays, and even some 4K phones with 3840 x 2160 pixel screens.
But LG has announced it’ll soon launch the first phone with something a little different: a 5.7 inch, 2880 x 1440 pixel widescreen display featuring an aspect ration of 18:9.
The new phone packs 564 pixels per inch, which is a little higher than what you get from a typical 5.5 inch, QHD phone… but the difference is probably small enough to be virtually unnoticeable.
LG says the extra screen real estate comes in handy for multi-tasking, now that Android supports viewing two apps on the screen at the same time. I suppose it’s also possible that widescreen movies will look a bit better, but there will still be black bars on films shot in 21:9.
While LG doesn’t say which of its upcoming phones will feature the new display, it seems likely that the company could use it in the upcoming LG G6.
The company says the new display is also has better outdoor visibility and lower power consumption than its previous screens.
