French device maker Lexibook offers netbooks, tablets, and other devices aimed at kids. But the company is also targeting the other end of the age spectrum with its latest device, the Serenity Ultra tablet. It’s designed for “older people.”
While the tablet runs an Android-based operating system, the user interface has been simplified and the icons appear to be much larger.
Lexibook sells the tablet in France for 300 Euros. This week it showed up at the FCC website, which is a good indication that the company hopes to sell the Serenity Ultra in the United States as well.
The Lexibook Serenity Ultra features an iPad mini-like 7.9 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display. It has a 1 GHz dual core processor, 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot, HDMI and USB ports, and front and rear cameras.
The tablet runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but Lexibook is playing up its custom software including software for photos, books, managing your agenda, and translating languages. There’s also a digital comic app with access to 3,000 titles, which seems a bit curious given the target market for this tablet.
Lexibook says you should be able to get about 5 hours of battery life from the tablet’s 3800mAh battery. The Serenity Ultra weighs about 1.1 pounds.
Interesting concept gone wrong as far as I can tell. Actually all Android needs is a mode similar to High-DPI that scales up text and icons… and seniors would have all they need.
