The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the company’s flagship business ultrabook launched earlier this year to much praise. Once Windows 8 dropped, shoppers could add that OS to the Carbon if they desired, it would just lack touch input. If that sounds like a horrible way to live, never fear. Today you can finally buy a Thinkpad X1 Carbon with touch starting at $1,499.

The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Touch is still a slim and sleek 14-inch ultrabook, though that finger friendliness adds some weight and thickness. This X1 is 3.4 pounds vs the original’s 3 pounds and measures 20.8mm at its thickest vs 18.9mm. Even with these additions the Carbon Touch is still ultrabooky, unlike the recently reviewed HP Envy TouchSmart 4.

Aside from adding touch, the X1 is the same inside and out, including a hinge that allows the screen to lay completely flat. It’s not as flexible as the IdeaPad Yoga, of course. Still, this feature adds to the touch friendliness. Aside from the screen you can also use the huge glass touchpad to get around or the TrackPoint — your fingers have a lot of choice.

Lenovo offers a few configurtion options for the Carbon Touch on their website. This includes the ability to have it shipped with Windows 7 instead of 8. I imagine someone out there would want a touch-enabled Win7 machine, I just don’t get why. Especially since this ThinkPad doesn’t have pen support.

Other specs include a 14-inch display (1600 x 900 resolution), Core i5 and i7 processors, 4GB or 8GB RAM, 128GB – 256GB SSD, HD webcam, dual-array mics, a fingerprint reader and other advanced security options. There’s no mobile broadband option on this model.

Perhaps in an effort to make up for the added weight, Lenovo is offering a slim 65W AC adapter as an option. The non-touch X1 Carbon has great battery life, so you can conceiveably leave the cord behind. However, touchscreens not only add weight but use more juice, so you might need the adapter for this one.

You can get the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch today through Lenovo’s website or resellers. Prices start at $1,499 for the configuration with a Core i5 processor.

  1. Adding almost a half pound for a touch screen to a three pound machine is a bit odd. Do like the high resolution screen though. But business class machines should have a dock option, at least a GigE port. Perhaps an indepndent consultant or pure road warrier would like it.

    1. I agree, I doubt this will actually make it to very many companies as an issued notebook.
