Lenovo is updating its Miix line of Windows tablets with two new models. The Miix 2 10 is a 10 inch tablet with an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor and a starting price of $449. The Miix 2 11 is a larger model with an Intel Haswell processor and a price tag of $599 and up.

Both tablets feature 1920 x 1080 pixel displays and up to 8 hours of battery life, and both run Windows 8.1 software. In select markets, they’ll also come standard with a multi-mode keyboard dock.

The keyboard attaches to the tablet via magnets, making it easy to connect and easy to detach. You can also flip around the tablet so it faces away from the keyboard — which means the built-in JBL speaker in the keyboard will be facing the same direction as the screen, which could come in handy when watching videos or listening to music in presentation mode.

You also get an extra full-sized USB port by using the keyboard. But the keyboard angle isn’t adjustable, and the connection isn’t as tight as it would be with a detachable keyboard that uses a latch, so this might not be the best solution if you’re looking for a laptop replacement that’s sturdy enough to use on your lap… in a moving vehicle.

The Miix 2 10 features an Atom Z3740 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and comes with Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student, like other small Windows tablets. It has a micro USB port, microSD card slot, and stereo JBL speakers, and the tablet measures 0.36 inches and weighs 1.3 pounds. The keyboard is another pound.

The Miix 2 11 has an 11.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display will be available with up to an Intel Core i5 processor, measures 0.43 inches thick and weighs 1.76 pounds. It’s a bit hefty for a handheld tablet, but thanks to the 1.21 keyboard dock, it’s not just tablet.

The larger model has a full-sized USB port and a much more powerful processor, but the rest of the specs are similar to those for the Miix 2 10.

  1. There are conflicing reports reports online as to some of the specs of the miix 2 10/11. There are some reports that the screen is 1920×1200. Also prices are often reported as higher @ $499 for the 10 and $699 for the 11.

Looking sweeter and better built than the Asus T100 but cheaper than the Dell Venue 11 Pro (the sweet keyboard is an additional $200), the Miix 2 10 looks appealing, but unlike the ThinkPad 8 with its Z3770, the ’10 is reported to sport the Z3740.

I’m sure your time with the ’10 was limited but in that limited time, how did the speed *feel* compared to the t100 with its lower resolution and the Venue 11 Pro with its faster processor or any other similarly speced device?

Also reported elsewhere was that there is no audio out (3.5mm) on the ’10…Do you know if it does or doesn’t?

    Thanx

    1. The 3.5mm audio jack in on the left side (as seen in the lead photo, below the microUSB and microHDMI ports). The power port is all by itself on the right side.

The info on the screen resolution, price and storage on the base model is different on every website, it’s madness. I really like the Asus T100 for what it’s worth, but quite intrigued by the Miix2 10.

  2. I wish they would just add a micro HDMI to the Miix 8.

Don’t understand the proliferation of all of these heavy tablets and even heavier convertibles. The Miix 8 weighs. .75 pounds and has the same internals. I’d rather hook it to a screen when needed with HDMI instead of carrying a tablet that weighs twice as much.

    1. Only the Toshiba Encore has a micro HDMI port among the 8 inch W8 tablets IIRC. What really hurts is that the Asus Vivotab Note 8 would’ve been an amazing tablet if it had a micro HDMI output, these Bay Trail tablets are capable already.

  3. That magnetic docking system is very bizarre… It looks like there’s moving parts when you first open it (i.e., a hinge), but instead it’s just two fixed magnets at different points? Huh?

  4. Hey Brad,
Except for the better screen in the 10inch … how does it compare to asus t100. what were your initial thoughts??

Also is the atom bay trail processor z3740 or z3770?

the fact that i cannot tilt the screen is a turnoff

    1. Only proper difference between the two is the resolution: 1080p on this vs. 720p on the T100.

Everything else is subject to taste: build materials, branded speakers, Lenovo’s own software, maybe even one more USB port to justify the $100-or-so premium.

      1. double the storage as well as two usb drives on dock and a rear camera for the lenovo- the latter is not necessary at all however
